Patrick J. Boyle, MD

Patrick J. Boyle, MD, is an associate professor of medicine and program director of the General Clinical Research Center at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque. A co-investigator in the Diabetes Prevention Program and the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, he is currently investigating brain energy metabolism in diabetes.

Dr. Boyle helped to develop the Diabetes Care Management Program at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and was recognized with the 1998 Zitter Award for Disease Management Leadership.

He earned his medical degree and served a residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland and completed a fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Widely published in medical research journals, he is a past member of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association.


Virginia Valentine, RN, MSN, CDE

Virginia Valentine, RN, MSN, CDE, is a clinical nurse specialist in Albuquerque, N.M. She is the chief executive officer of Diabetes Network, Inc., a disease management company and American Diabetes Association (ADA)-recognized diabetes education program, and owner of Marketplace Technology, a consulting firm for educational programming.

Her 20 years of experience have included work in public health, acute care, and ambulatory settings. She helped to develop the Diabetes Care Management Program at the Univer-sity of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and served as coordinator of Presbyterian Diabetes Center, an ADA-recognized program also in Albuquerque.

A co-author of Diabetes: Type 2 and What to Do, 101 Tips for Improving Your Blood Sugar, and 101 Tips for Staying Healthy With Diabetes, she has written numerous articles on diabetes care topics.

Debbie Hinnen, MN, ARNP, CDE, was the associate editor in charge of coordinating this From Research to Practice section.
