Sonia Caprio, MD, is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology, and director of the childhood obesity/type 2 diabetes clinic at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.
She earned a medical degree and served a residency in medicine at the University of Naples in Italy and was a research fellow in metabolism at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., before coming to Yale in 1986 to complete a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology. She has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1989 and is a member of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) study section of diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism.
Dr. Caprio’s work in diabetes was funded initially by a fellowship from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF). She received a JDF career development award in 1989 to study hypoglycemic counterregulation in children with type 1 diabetes. Afterward, she developed a new area of inquiry focusing on the pathophysiology of the metabolic defects of childhood obesity. Since 1991, her research in childhood obesity has been supported by a National Institutes of Health research project grant. Dr. Caprio is now concentrating her efforts on studying the mechanism responsible for the transition from normal glucose tolerance to prediabetes to diabetes in obese children. She is the principal investigator for the Yale center of the NIDDK’s Multicenter Study of the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Youth (STOPP-T2DM). She won the Bayer Scholar Award in Diabetes Research in 2003.
