For more than two decades, Patrick J. Lustman, PhD, and Ray E. Clouse, MD, have studied the interaction of mental and physical processes in patients with chronic medical illnesses. Dr. Lustman is a professor of psychiatry and Dr. Clouse is a professor of medicine and psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. The duo serve as co-directors of the university's new Center for Mind/Body Research.

Dr. Lustman received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his doctorate from Michigan State University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Washington University, whereupon he joined the faculty there.

Dr. Lustman received a New Investigator Award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health in 1983 to study psychiatric disorders in diabetes, and funding of this work continues to the present time. He has served on the editorial boards of Diabetes Care and Clinical Diabetes and has been a member of the Research Policy Committee and the Grant Review Panel of the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Clouse received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University before coming to Washington University to complete his postdoctoral training. He is a faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and conducts clinical research with a focus on functional gastrointestinal disorders, motility of the gastrointestinal tract, and the interaction of psychiatric disorders with medical illness.

Dr. Clouse sits on the editorial boards of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Psychosomatic Medicine, and the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine and has served as co-chair of the last two educational campaigns on functional gastrointestinal disorders by the American Gastroenterological Association. He is recognized for his clinical skills at the Washington University Medical Center and in the St. Louis region.
