George A. Burghen, MD, MS, FAAP, is a professor of pediatrics and chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis. He is also a professor of nursing in the College of Nursing at UTHSC and director of endocrinology at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.Go


After receiving his medical degree at the University of Mississippi in Jackson, he completed both an internship and a residency in pediatrics at the University of Missouri in Columbia. As a major in the U.S. Army, he spent his tour of duty at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md. At the University of Tennessee, he completed his pediatric endocrinology fellowship training and earned a master's degree in biochemistry.

Dr. Burghen was a recipient of a research career development award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He is a long-time member of and volunteer for the American Diabetes Association and has served on its national board of directors. His current interests include the childhood obesity epidemic, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetes education, and camping for youth with diabetes. He is the founder of Camp Hopewell, a camp for children with diabetes, established in 1976.
